Shark Deterrents? Fang Shoey Shark Repellents!

Another Shark thread ... I've noticed a couple of products recently that claim to ease your fears about sharky water. As a white-fleshed UK-based sailor I know I'm not alone when venturing into tooth-filled waters off foreign soil. Sure these guys are not really a big risk for us water goers, but it does cross ones mind when the suns setting and you've a long paddle in... One product is the SharkGuard, a repellent signal as seen by many on the countless shark programs that grace our TV screens. Aquanaut of Australia sells this device, which is used by Scuba divers, especially professionals. Sounds great and surely worth every penny to me, even if you’re only occasionally scared of shadows in the water. However the commercial version Aquanaut are trying to sell to state beach authorities, hoping to repel unwelcome teeth away from busy swimming beaches, in vital tourist dependant areas, has suffered a blow after the Queensland government rejected it on grounds of there being ‘No scientific merit’ and citing insufficient proof. This was pretty radical off the back of recent fatal attacks by Bull sharks in that very region. Perhaps then we should look at a more err, Zen approach? Fang Shoey, pictured above, sell a shark look-alike sticker they say tells the 'Blind' great whites and the like that this is one of their mates, not just a sticker underneath your stick! Who knows this might have more merit than the SharkGuard, but it looks like a magic force field, mental or not, is still not a real possibility just yet, so watch out for your toes…and legs…and…
